BT Competes at District Music

On Friday, April 19, BT's Upper School musicians traveled to Tekamah-Herman Schools for the NSAA District Music Contest. Soloist entries are rated by a judge against a rating scale from 1 (Superior) to 5 (Poor), while large ensembles are rated by a three-judge panel of music educators. The final outcome is based on the average of the three judges, and in rare cases this can result in the best possible rating, a 1+ Unanimous Superior. BT's ensembles not only performed at a completely different level than the 11 other schools, they extended their ensembles' streaks of District Music Superior ratings that date back to at least 2016, when all current members were in first and fourth grades!

Upper School Orchestra, Gold-Tones Jazz Combo, and Raider-Blues Jazz Combo all earned "1+ Unanimous Superior" ratings, and were three of only five instrumental ensembles to accomplish that feat. In addition, the Gold-Tones earned a perfect score from one of the three judges, and the Raider-Blues earned a perfect score from two judges (a first for BT at District Music)!

Pirate Radio earned a "1 Superior" rating, and Upper School Choir earned a "1+ Unanimous Superior" rating. They were 2 of only 4 choirs all day to earn Superior ratings of any kind.

Solo entries earning "2 Excellent" ratings:

  • Annabelle DeWater, '27 (trumpet)
  • TG Su, '26 (cello)

Solo entries earning "1 Superior" ratings:

  • Christine Aspen, '26 (violin)
  • Eva Cohen, '26 (violin)
  • Brett Fischer, '24 (viola)
  • Elliot Clark, '26 (cello)
  • Eric Zhou, '26 (cello)
  • Cameron Vakili-Zadeh, '27 (piano, perfect score)

The BT community has the opportunity to see these spectacular performers in Swanson Auditorium at the Middle and Upper School Bands concert on May 7 and the Middle and Upper School Orchestras and Choirs concert and Music Senior Night on May 14!
