Students experience foundational learning in Brownell Talbot's Lower School that puts them on a trajectory to becoming empowered and determined individuals who are confident in who they are, know how to advocate for themselves and others, and are poised to make a positive impact on the world.
Learning to Learn
At BT, we prioritize collaborative learning, effective communication, cultural competence, imaginative thinking, and empathetic understanding in our teaching and learning. Our intentionally small learning environments require active student participation and offer ample opportunity to collaborate, lead, ask questions, and receive personalized feedback.
Early Years
For Our Youngest Learners
Early Years is Brownell Talbot’s preschool program designed with intention to ensure three and four year olds thrive in a safe, fun, and educational environment. At BT, Early Years students interact with experienced teachers, who provide just the right amount of daily challenge for each child. At BT, we nurture each child’s inherent desire to learn, creating a strong foundation for academic success and a lifelong love of learning.
Differentiation
Meeting Students Where They Are in All Areas of Development
Intentionally small learning environments are just the beginning. Students come to us with varying academic levels. Teachers provide just the right amount of challenge daily to individuals. This keeps children engaged and continually encourages the intrinsic motivation to learn - a most powerful gift and impulse that resides in us all.
Specialized Teachers
French, Spanish, Science, Music, Art, Guidance, Library, and PE
BT does not wait to pair experts with our curious students. Teachers with subject matter expertise share their passion and enthusiasm with our littlest learners who continually want to know more.
Swimming
Part of the PE Curriculum
In addition to providing an understanding of good sportsmanship and teamwork, the coursework instills practical life skills in order to prepare students for making the right choices for their personal health. Students in kindergarten - grade 4 swim in PE class once a week.
Social Emotional Curriculum
Fostering Emotional Intelligence
BT’s systemic approach to emotional intelligence through the use of the RULER program increases resiliency and emotional intelligence, improves attention and behavior in school, and helps reduce stress, anxiety, and conflict. RULER was created by the Yale School of Medicine’s Child Study Center and is an acronym for the five skills of emotional intelligence: recognizing, understanding, labeling, expressing, and regulating.
Rounding Out the School Day
Beyond the Classroom, Beyond Expectations
BT Beyond, Brownell Talbot’s auxiliary program, offers students several opportunities to learn beyond the school day. Raider Zone extended care is offered from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. In addition, students can sign up for enrichment classes - everything from ballet to the stock market game - as well as youth sports including swim team, flag football, volleyball, soccer. And don’t miss out on BT’s Camp Discovery, providing full-day summer camp as well as seasonal camps, and pop-up events.
