On Friday, March 22, all BT Middle Schoolers traveled to Platteview Central Jr High School for their Music Invitational contest. At this event, ensemble performances are rated by a three-judge panel of music educators against a scale of 1 Superior, 2 Excellent, or 3 Good on several music skill categories, then given an overall rating based on the total points from the category ratings. The final outcome is based on the average of the three judges, and in rare cases this can result in the best possible rating, a 1+ Unanimous Superior. BT's students once again showed why our program is known for its vision of "having tremendous fun becoming breathtakingly artistic musicians" by earning the following results:

  • Sixth and Seventh Grade Big Band earned a "2 Excellent" rating against a very difficult rating scale for jazz bands and was only one point away from a Superior rating.
  • Eighth Grade Jazz Combo earned a "1+ Unanimous Superior" and was the only jazz band all day to earn a Superior rating of any kind.
  • Fifth and Sixth Grade Chorus (the youngest ensemble at the contest) not only earned a "1+ Unanimous Superior," but was only deducted 1 point by one judge, and earned perfect scores from the other two.
  • Seventh and Eighth Grade Chorus earned a "1+ Unanimous Superior," with one judge giving them a perfect score.
  • "On Deck" a cappella not only earned a "1+ Unanimous Superior," but was only deducted 1 point by one judge and earned perfect scores from the other two.
