Today Dr. Vaught virtually joined peers in Hong Kong and Switzerland to lead a conversation about teaching sustainability. Dr. Vaught shared many examples of this in action at BT:
"At BT, sustainability is woven into the curriculum to develop purpose-driven students who feel a duty to steward the planet. Through engaging projects, students make a positive impact. In Early Years, students adopt trees in Memorial Park, observe nature patterns in the Nature Classroom, and build community through gardening with Upper School students in cross community partnerships. Lower School students explore their identity as contributing citizens in a field study on advocacy and they tackle global water issues as problem-solvers, even inviting parents to a showcase titled: "Where Does Our Water Go?". Middle School students lead recycling initiatives, strengthening their identities. Upper School students are able to find purpose through field work and sustainability projects in AP Environmental Science.
These hands-on experiences make sustainability concrete. Students connect emotionally with nature and see themselves as change makers, empowered to make their unique impact.
Though the future is uncertain, BT's Portrait of a Graduate brings hope that students will become compassionate systems thinkers leading the way to a sustainable world."
