As Brownell Talbot embarks on an exciting new chapter with the transformative “Building Together” campus transformation project, the community came together to bid a fond farewell to the existing Lower School building and Roberts Gymnasium. These facilities have served as beloved spaces for learning, growth, and countless memories over the years, and the school ensured that their legacy will live on long past their demolition.
Lower School Farewell Open House
On May 20, the school hosted the Lower School Farewell Open House, inviting students, alumni and current and past BT families, faculty, and staff to attend. This special event provided an opportunity for attendees to walk the hallways one last time, popping into classrooms and reliving fond memories. The nostalgia was palpable as visitors reminisced about their experiences within these walls.
Yearbooks dating back to the 1950s were on display, allowing visitors to explore the rich history of Brownell Talbot through the years. As part of the time capsule that will be buried in the new building, individuals were given the opportunity to complete memory cards, preserving their personal stories and reflections for future generations.
To offer a glimpse into the future, the open house also featured a 3D rendering of the new facilities, as well as site maps and interior renderings. This allowed attendees to envision the exciting possibilities that lie ahead while still honoring the legacy of the past.
“I was in high school at Brownell in the ’50s when this building was built. I recall toting books and papers from the old white building to the new school. We were happy to have such a nice space, but also sad about saying goodbye to that old rambling wreck of a white building. I remember making a tile in Ms. Meyers’ art room for the tile wall. I was thrilled to see it hung with the others from our classes on the entryway wall. I thoroughly enjoyed the [open house and] individualized tour of the school on May 20. Thank you to the warm and courteous staff for that, and all you’ve done to make BT a great school. I’m eager to see the new building when it is completed.” - Marlene Rohrke Pantos, Class of 1961
All-School Photo
On May 6, all BT students, faculty, and staff gathered for an all school photo. This historic moment captured the entire community on the current playground and along the Lower School building and balcony, preserving the memory of these iconic structures. The image will serve as a lasting tribute to the buildings that have played such a significant role for generations of Brownell Talbot families.
Student-Created Tributes
During the final days of school, students were encouraged to leave their mark on the buildings in a creative and meaningful way. They were invited to paint and draw on the walls and windows, creating a vibrant and expressive farewell to the spaces that have nurtured their growth and learning. As Brownell Talbot embarks on this transformative journey, the community has demonstrated its deep appreciation for its history and a commitment to preserving the cherished memories and connections that have been forged within these walls. While the physical structures may change, the spirit of Brownell Talbot lives on, and the school’s legacy will continue to inspire and guide future generations of students.
